(Abstract)
n this experiment, we evaluated the deployment of a sea bottom seismological station in shallow waters to investigate the influence of the marine environmental dynamics on the sensor performance. The test site was located approximately 70 m offshore of Texel Island, the Netherlands. A novel station design was developed to withstand the challenging shallow-water conditions, including strong sediment dynamics, tidal currents, and intense biological activity. The system incorporated one seismometer (Trillium Compact 120 s) and two hydrophones (HTI-04-PCA/ULF, 100 sec - 8 kHz) to monitor pressure variations. The data was recorded by two KUM 6D6 data loggers. An acoustic doppler current meter (Aanderaa RCM11) was used to characterize current dynamics associated with the recorded seismological signals. In addition, dedicated metal anchoring weights were installed to stabilize the sensor frame against sediment movement and shifting seabed conditions. The newly developed system was deployed for a two-month period between July and September 2022. To complement the offshore deployment, two land-based reference stations were operated simultaneously: one located directly onshore near the marine station (Centaur 4 data logger, Trillium Posthole 120s) and another situated several kilometers inland on Texel Island (Taurus data logger, Trilium120s). The purpose of these co-located onshore stations was to isolate and identify the environmental factors specific to the marine setting that could influence the performance of the offshore station. This data set contains the time-corrected seismometer data. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code NR.
