(Abstract)
The renewed and growing interest in lunar exploration is leading to the creation of various test-bed facilities for instruments and operational procedures around the globe. Here, we report on an initial seismic data set collected in an exploratory study in the 700m2 regolith yard of the DLR-ESA LUNA Moon analog facility in Cologne, Germany. The facility includes a permanent seismic broad-band station as well as 500 m of fibre-optic cable deployed in a grid-like pattern on the concrete floor below the regolith simulant. DAS data from this fibre were obtained during 3 days in November 2024, partly overlapping with a geophone qualification campaign, and used to obtain geolocations for the fibre channels. In addition to providing the first seismic characterization of LUNA, with implications for future seismic campaigns and the use of the facility to help interpreting data collected on the Moon, the measurements provided the opportunity to compare DAS and conventional seismic data for a dense, small-scale urban deployment at an indoor location. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code DL.
