(Abstract)
The temporary 4W network represents an initial seismic data set collected as an exploratory study in the 700m² regolith yard of the LUNA Moon analog facility jointly operated by DLR and ESA in Cologne, Germany. The facility opened at the end of September 2024 and provides a simulation environment to test hardware, commanding, procedures and operations for future planetary, and especially lunar, missions, including astronaut training in a controlled, standardized environment. In that capacity, it includes a permanent seismic broad-band station (DL.LUNAF) as well as 500 m of fibre-optic cable, containing single-mode, multi-mode and an engineered fibre, deployed in a grid-like pattern on the concrete floor below the regolith simulant. The regolith layer is generally about 60 cm thick, but extends up to 3 m deep in the 130m² deep floor area of LUNA. DAS data from this cable, using a Constellation fibre and corresponding interrogator, were obtained during three days in November 2024, partly overlapping with a geophone qualification campaign using 9 vertical-component geophones and one broad-band seismometer (Trillium compact 120 s), and used to obtain geolocations for the fibre channels. In addition to providing the first seismic characterization of LUNA, with implications for future seismic campaigns and the use of the facility to help interpreting data collected on the Moon, the measurements provide the opportunity to compare DAS and conventional seismic data for a dense, small-scale urban deployment at an indoor location. Recordings include hammer shots, road and airborne traffic, crane motion within the hall, and small rovers and people moving. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 4W. Waveform data are available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 4W.
