(Abstract)
The seismic network (FDSN code 3S) around Jøtul vent field covers a region of magmatic accretion at the ultraslow spreading Knipovich Ridge. The network consists of an inner network of about 15 km aperture concentrated around the axial volcanic ridge and the adjacent inferred detachment fault hosting Jøtul vent field. Six DEPAS ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) of type LOBSTER equipped with KUM 6d6 data loggers and Trillium Compact broadband 3-component seismometers were deployed on 28 July 2023 by RV Polarstern. One OBS of Nammu type containing a KUM 6d7 data logger complemented the network. This network recorded for a period of 13 months to capture also episodic seismicity. To improve earthquake location, resolution and depth penetration of seismic tomography, we deployed on 15 June 2024 eight additional OBS from board RV Helmer Hanssen in cooperation with the University of Tromsø. We achieved a total network aperture of about 50 km targeting the seismicity around the axial volcanic ridge and the off-axis area of highly elevated, fault-controlled mountains. The vent field area itself was surrounded by a triangle of stations. All instruments were successfully recovered during cruise MSM131 on RV Maria S. Merian between August 23 and 25, 2024. The data set consists of time-corrected continuous mini seed records of three seismometer channels and one hydrophone channel sampled at 100 Hz (long-term network) and 250 Hz (short-term network), respectively. OBS positions at the seafloor were determined by interpolation at 2/3 of the distance between the deployment and recovery position at the seafloor. Position accuracy is estimated to be about 100 m. Skew values were obtained for all stations and reached values of up to 14 s. Clock drift in this experiment was nonlinear with the exception of OBS JOT07. Therefore, Station JOT07 served as master station to correct OBS clock drift relative to this station. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 3S.
