  • (Abstract) As young intracontinental volcanic system the Eifel region is characterized by huge basaltic fields distributed over large areas and the sporadic activity of individual volcanoes at very different times. They are excellent examples for applying and testing the new models of transcrustal plumbing systems and inferring their implications for volcanic hazards and eruption scenarios, as signs of incipient unrest have been detected in recent years that are not understood and are difficult to assess. The distributed basaltic fields in the Eifel are the focus to study the system over the full depth range, from the broad upwelling of the upper mantle, the formation of mantle reservoirs, the mush-type reservoir at the Moho and in the lower crust, to the differentiated phonolitic reservoirs in the upper crust leading to explosive eruption centres (Dahm et al., 2020). The Eifel is one of the few regions worldwide where transcrustal feeder channels from the upper mantle to the upper crust have been identified beneath such phonolitic centres. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 2D, and is fully open.
