Archive access to restricted data

Access is restricted for:

  • data from recent temporary deployments (limited-duration embargos)
  • some permanent third-party stations/networks for which GEOFON also acts as archive and distribution point
For data sets archived at GEOFON which are embargoed, the expected date that the data should be made available is shown on each data set's web page. We strive to enable access as soon as possible after that date. Please contact us in case of difficulties.

Access to these data may be granted only if the data user can produce written permission from the data producer to use the data, i.e. from the PI of the experiment or a representative of the institution that operates the network. Requests for data access must be sent to GEOFON including the permission statement. Once access is configured, users can request restricted data using FDSN web services just as for open data.

Principal investigators are generally shown on the network pages as "Creator(s)". If you are unable to contact them directly, please send us email including:

  • your name (and institution if relevant),
  • your email address (as it is used for our token-based authentication system, this is essential, and must be your official one, if using eduGAIN),
  • the data set you want, with its FDSN network code,
  • a brief description of your intended use of the data,
  • other information that might be relevant.

It might be helpful to describe which stations/channels you are interested in (e.g. all or just a specific subset), the time range, and whether you have scientific collaboration with the data producer now or in the past.

We will endeavour to assist you in obtaining the necessary permission.

While you may have been granted access to a given data set in principle, two more things are needed to download data:
  1. We must add you to the list of authorised users for the specific network, with the email address you provided.
  2. You need a current valid token for authentication - identifying your client as associated with you. Get a token from our service here.
Please note we monitor requests of these data. Your personal data, generally credentials used to identify you to us, such as an email address, are collected and retained. These are used to check whether you are allowed access to the data you request. Summary statistics for restricted networks are shared with the relevant data providers, for example project principal investigators (PIs) for temporary deployments, to enable them to understand usage of their data, and verify that their data sets are being shared according to their requirements. Some of these data providers are external to GFZ. (Data protection at GEOFON.)
