(Abstract)
Snowmelt driven floods can evolve to exceptional events, especially in parallel shaped catchments with parallel timing of discharge generation. Hence, knowing the reaction especially of snow-rich headwater catchments and the evolution of the combined hydrographs after sequential confluences. Seismic sensors provide a complementary approach to in-stream equipment and are able to survey a wider reach of river behaviour, which is especially relevant in steep mountain streams that change their hydraulic geometry quickly. In the WASH project, 30 seismic stations consisting of Digos DataCubes recording at 400 sps, vertical component 4.5 Hz PE6B geophones and 12 V air alkaline batteries were distributed next to all major headwater and medium sized rivers of the Erzgebirge, Germany. The data sets can be used to invert physical models of seismic signals due to force fluctuations of turbulent flowing water. Waveform data is available from the GEOFON data centre, under network code 2I.
